Soapstone Idli Dish – Unique Piece
Country of Origin: India
Period: 19th Century
Dimensions: 24 x 23 x 4 cm
Material: Natural Soapstone (steatite)

Formerly used for preparing idlis, small steamed rice cakes, it now bears the marks of time, giving it all its authenticity and unique character.

Soapstone, or steatite, is a natural rock primarily composed of talc, recognized for its density, softness to the touch, and remarkable heat resistance. For centuries, it has been used in the manufacture of kitchen utensils and utilitarian objects due to its ability to retain and uniformly diffuse heat. Its robustness and durability have made it a preferred material in many artisanal traditions across Asia.

The circular cavities carved into the stone bear witness to its original function and now give it a singular sculptural presence. The natural nuances, the irregularities of manual craftsmanship, and the patina developed over the years fully embody the Wabi-sabi aesthetic, which celebrates the beauty of imperfections and the richness of objects that have spanned eras. Diverted from its initial use, this dish can now be displayed as a decorative object or collector's item, bringing depth, texture, and history to an interior.

Please note that each piece is unique and exhibits variations in color, texture, patina, shape, and wear, which attest to its authenticity and history.
